"Crépu: Our DNA"
Hair is a medium that Black people use to express creativity, to preserve history, and is seen as a symbol of resilience. Created by Hors Pair Social and The Moving Art Gallery, Crépu: Our DNA is an artistic celebration and meditation on Black hair. It is also Ottawa's first ever Black Hair Art Show in which these ideas are explored through photography, film, discussion and performance.
For this year's edition of Crépu: Our DNA, activities will include:
A live hair care demo
A hair art runway
Musical and spoken word performances
Museum presentation - The innovation and history of Black hair care technology in Canada
Screening of short film Nid d’oiseau and panel discussion
Reception and music by DJ Velvet
Haut(e): An Art Fashion Show
Haut(e) is an art fashion show presented by the Moving Art Gallery featuring works by Kelvin Stidwill and Comfort Survival, with sounds by Jayel.
Based on the importance of providing space and opportunity for new and upcoming artists based in Ottawa, Haut(e) also aims to address the ongoing issue of sustainability by recognizing the artistry within the textile medium. Fashion itself is a form of expression, but under the current climate of changing attitudes towards how we consume clothing and view it in the sphere of art, the commercial aspect of the industry can seem to extract the artistic vitality of the works created. Cloth-work is a sculptural practice, and can be contemplated upon in the same light as all other forms of art held within gallery walls. In an effort to showcase a classic runway show by highlighting Black and Queer designers in a fine art context, The MAG has joined forced with Gallery 101 to re-introduce the idea of a fashion runway show as a high art, as a moving object, made by young, active and local designers.
Join us for a night of music, togetherness and support for your local artists for a night of iconic looks and incredible fashions!
This event is powered by The City Of Ottawa.
Behind The Fit: a Style Workshop and Closet Purge
